But Sam Callahan is neither. He’s a former political tracker turned lawyer, and Zunker uses that background to inject real tension into the story—like when Sam leverages his old skills to dig up dirt on a witness, and you’re left wondering if he’s crossing a line or just playing the game. The audiobook’s pacing is relentless, but not exhausting; it’s the kind of listen that keeps you hooked during a commute without leaving you mentally drained afterward. Noah Berman’s narration is a standout. He doesn’t overperform, which is a relief in a genre where some narrators mistake volume for intensity. His Sam is weary but determined, and he handles the legal jargon with the ease of someone who’s actually read a deposition before. That said, the production isn’t flawless: there’s a scene midway through where the audio levels dip noticeably during a tense confrontation, pulling me out of the moment. And while the political intrigue is compelling, a subplot involving Sam’s mentor feels underdeveloped—it’s introduced with weight but fizzles without much payoff. Still, these are minor quibbles. For fans of *The Firm*’s moral dilemmas or *The Pelican Brief*’s conspiracy-driven stakes, *Shadow Shepherd* is a worthy addition to the rotation—just maybe not one to listen to on a plane if you’re prone to white-knuckle suspense.
