I’ll admit, I approached *Shaman’s Crossing* with skepticism—another fantasy trilogy about a reluctant hero, right? Wrong. Hobb crafts something far grittier, a story that feels closer to a frontier tragedy than a traditional quest. Nevare Burvelle is the kind of protagonist who infuriates you, then makes you root for him all over again. His journey from brash cadet to disillusioned outcast is slow-burning but relentless, and Hobb’s refusal to soften his flaws makes him unforgettable. Jonathan Barlow’s narration elevates the material even further. His delivery of Nevare’s internal monologues—ragged with guilt, laced with stubborn pride—is masterful, and his ability to switch between characters without losing their essence is rare. That said, the pacing drags in the middle third, where the story meanders through political intrigue that lacks the visceral punch of the early chapters. The production is crisp, though, with no noticeable audio issues, and the emotional payoff in the final act makes the slower sections worthwhile. If you’re looking for a fantasy that prizes psychological depth over spectacle, this is your audiobook. If you need nonstop action, you might want to hold off until the next installment.
