McClain’s performance sells it perfectly; his delivery is rough-edged, almost feral during combat, but there’s a weary intelligence beneath it that keeps Max from feeling like a one-note monster. The standout scene? A mid-book confrontation where Consume doesn’t just kill an enemy—it *rewrites* them, and McClain’s voice drops into something inhuman, layered with echoes. It’s the kind of moment that makes you pause the audiobook just to process what the hell just happened. That said, the pacing isn’t flawless. The first act drags slightly with exposition about Tanila’s political threats, and while the worldbuilding is rich, some lore dumps feel clunky in audio format (a map or visual aid would’ve helped). The real critique, though, is the lack of *consequences*—or at least, the delayed ones. Max’s power escalates so rapidly that the stakes occasionally feel weightless, like a video game where you’ve unlocked god mode too soon. Still, the final act’s twists land hard, and the narration’s raw energy carries you through the slower patches. If you love fantasy that embraces its darkness without apology—and a protagonist who’s more force of nature than hero—this is a must-listen.
