Shōgun, Part One

Ralph Lister’s narration for *Shōgun, Part One* is the kind of performance that makes you question why audiobooks aren’t always this immersive. From the moment Blackthorne’s ship splinters against the Japanese coast, Lister’s voice carries the weight of a man drowning in uncertainty—his raspy, exhausted delivery in those early scenes is tactile, as if you can feel the salt crust on your skin. The way he handles Toranaga, the novel’s magnetic antagonist, is particularly chilling; every pause in his measured, aristocratic tone feels like a threat waiting to land. The production value is exceptional, too, with subtle ambient sounds (the creak of a ship’s hull, the whisper of silk robes) grounding you in the era without ever distracting from the story. That said, Clavell’s sprawling cast occasionally becomes a liability. Lister does his best to differentiate between characters with similar cadences, but the sheer volume of Japanese names and honorifics can feel like a foreign language overload—especially in the first half, where the history lessons pile up. And let’s be honest: Clavell isn’t subtle. His dialogue can veer into didacticism, and some of the political maneuvering drags in audiobook form, where your mind can’t skim ahead. Still, if you’re here for the epic sweep of a man adrift in a world that wants to crush him—and the slow-burn revenge he dreams of—this audiobook delivers. Just be prepared to take notes on the family trees.
