The dual narration is a masterclass in contrast: Sebastian York’s performance as the uptight, spreadsheet-loving hero is so deliciously rigid that you *feel* his blood pressure spike every time his family derails another plan. His deep, slightly growly tone sells the exasperation, but it’s the moments when his voice softens—like when he’s caught off-guard by the heroine’s kindness—that make the romance land. Emma Wilder, meanwhile, is pure sunshine with a side of sass. Her delivery of the heroine’s lines, especially during the town’s more ridiculous mishaps (a goat loose in the hardware store, anyone?), had me laughing out loud. The chemistry between them is electric, but it’s the *pacing* that impressed me most—this isn’t a slow burn so much as a simmer with occasional explosions. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The middle act drags slightly as the town-building subplots multiply, and there’s a repeated joke about the hero’s love of binders that wears thin by the third act. I also wished for more variation in York’s delivery during the hero’s internal monologues; his default "grumpy boss" tone sometimes blurs the emotional beats. But the production quality is top-notch—no awkward edits or volume inconsistencies—and the final act’s payoff, complete with a hilariously disastrous town festival, makes up for any lulls. If you love rom-coms with heart, humor, and a side of power tools, this is a winner. Just don’t blame me if you start craving a small-town reality show of your own.
