I picked up 'Silence for the Dead' seeking a blend of historical atmosphere and spine-tingling suspense, and I wasn't disappointed, though I could have done without some familiar character dynamics. Simone St. James delivers a truly immersive experience set against the backdrop of a nation grappling with shell shock. The atmosphere at Portis House is thick with tension—part haunted house, part human tragedy. From the outset, Billie Fulford-Brown's narration is superb, lending just the right amount of gravitas and understated horror to St. James's prose. Her voice for the damaged soldiers is particularly nuanced, conveying their fractured states without sentimentality. The descriptive passages detailing the fog, the decaying hospital, and the lingering trauma feel visceral, transporting you to a time when returning soldiers were often misunderstood and feared. The central mystery unfolds slowly, relying on atmospheric dread rather than relentless plotting. St. James excels at building an eerie sense that something—a person or a place—is truly lost forever at Portis House. My only minor critique is that the pacing felt slightly uneven in the middle section, stretching some moments that could have been tighter. Secondly, while the narrative keeps you guessing, a few plot points felt a notch or two removed from truly shocking and unexpected twists, though they certainly served to ratchet up the tension. Overall, a compelling listen that explores love, loss, and the heavy weight of secrets buried beneath the silent suffering of war.
