St. James braids two timelines (1950 and the “present” of 1998) with surgical precision, but the 1998 sections sometimes feel like obligatory thriller scaffolding compared to the visceral 1950 plot. And while the noir elements shine (a corrupt cop, a too-smooth journalist, a fire that *definitely* wasn’t an accident), the supernatural thread wobbles—hinted at so heavily it either needed to pay off bigger or be cut entirely. Still, the audiobook’s production elevates even the weaker moments: the way Voss’s voice drops to a murmur during flashbacks, or how the sound design uses wind like a character, swirling around the listener. This isn’t a book you *solve*—it’s one that solves *you*, peeling back layers of class, guilt, and the lies women tell to survive. Just don’t listen at night if you’ve got creaky floorboards.
