I picked up *Sistersong* expecting a fresh take on the *Twa Sisters* legend, and what I got was a brutal, spellbinding journey that feels both intimate and epic. Robyn Holdaway’s narration is a revelation—her voice has this gravelly, almost mythic quality that makes the bards’ tales feel like they’re being whispered from a fire-lit cave. She nails the cadence of the original ballad, but adds layers of emotional complexity that make the sisters’ conflict feel raw and real. The first half of the audiobook is a slow, hypnotic build, with Holdaway’s delivery of the sisters’ backstory so vivid it’s hard to look away. But when the action kicks in, her pacing becomes razor-sharp, keeping you on the edge of your seat during the climactic betrayals and magical showdowns. I did notice the prose sometimes leans into archaic phrasing that felt a bit forced, and the ending, while poetic, left me slightly underwhelmed. Still, the audiobook’s production quality—especially the haunting score and subtle sound effects—makes it a visceral experience. If you love stories where myth and human frailty collide, this is a must-listen.
