The flat, measured tone actually suits the subject: this isn’t a story of heroics or dramatic speeches, but of calculations, weather reports, and bureaucratic risk assessments. The narration keeps pace with Covella’s tightly structured timeline, and the lack of dramatic inflection somehow makes the stakes feel higher. You’re not being told a story; you’re reading a declassified file. The book itself is fascinating—June 1962, a Soviet ice station abandoned in the Arctic, and a U.S. Navy operation (Project Coldfeet) to raid it. The logistics alone are mind-boggling: using an improvised skyhook system to extract agents from the ice. Covella dives deep into the technical and political details, which is both the book’s strength and its limitation. At times, the narrative gets bogged down in procedural minutiae, and the absence of personal voices from participants creates a slight emotional distance. I wanted to hear more about the human toll—of fear, isolation, decision-making under pressure. That said, the pacing is tight, the research impressive, and the production quality of the audiobook is clean and professional. While it won’t replace classics like *A Thread of Grace* or *The Falcon and the Snowman* in emotional depth, Skyhooked delivers a uniquely cerebral slice of Cold War intrigue. Not perfect, but undeniably distinctive.
