About This Audiobook

Shonna Slayton’s *Snow White’s Mirror* isn’t your grandmother’s fairy tale—it’s a razor-sharp Edwardian gothic nightmare where folklore bleeds into family secrets. Billie Whitlock, a bright but sheltered 16-year-old, stumbles into a web of lies spun by her uncle, who insists her mother’s death wasn’t an accident but a ritual gone wrong. The Bergmann family’s dark legacy unfolds like a poisoned chalice, laced with stepmothers who might not be stepmothers, mirrors that whisper, and a curse that skips generations like a stone. Slayton’s prose drips with the scent of old libraries and wet earth, evoking the claustrophobic grandeur of Edith Wharton’s drawing rooms meets Angela Carter’s feminist grotesques. This isn’t a tale for the faint of heart, but for listeners who crave fairy tales that feel like they’ve been dug up from a graveyard and dusted off for revival, it’s a triumph. The audiobook’s immersive narration by Catherine Gaffney turns the story into a living nightmare, her voice shifting effortlessly between Billie’s youthful curiosity and the eerie, measured tones of the Bergmann matriarchs. The production, too, is pitch-perfect: the lush sound design never overpowers the story, instead wrapping around it like fog around a corpse.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

Catherine Gaffney’s narration is the real spell here—her voice is the kind that slithers into your ears and curls around your spine. She nails the duality of Billie’s world: one moment, a wide-eyed girl navigating Victorian society’s rigid expectations; the next, a horror-struck witness to something far older and hungrier. Gaffney’s performance is especially chilling during the Bergmann women’s scenes, where her voice drops into a low, almost musical register, like a lullaby sung over a grave. The pacing, too, is masterful. The first half unfolds like a slow-burn mystery, all corsets and tea parties and stifled screams, before hurtling into a crescendo of gothic dread that never lets up. That said, the audiobook stumbles slightly in the middle act, where the Bergmann family’s backstory gets a bit too tangled in exposition. A tighter edit might’ve helped, but by the time the full horror of the curse unravels, you’ll forgive any minor stumbles. The production quality is top-tier—no distracting inconsistencies, just the occasional creak of a floorboard to remind you you’re listening to a ghost story. If you’re a fan of fairy tales that bite, or audiobooks that linger long after the last word, this is one to lose yourself in. Just don’t expect to sleep well afterward.
