About This Audiobook

Barbara Jenkins’ *So Long as It’s Wild* isn’t just a memoir—it’s a survivalist’s love letter to the untamed world, written with the grit of a woman who refused to let poverty or prejudice clip her wings. Jenkins’ prose crackles with the kind of raw, poetic grit you’d expect from someone who grew up bathing in a galvanized tub and dreaming of jungles while digging through Ozark trash heaps for treasure. Her voice isn’t that of a polished traveler; it’s the ragged, exhilarating roar of a woman who clawed her way out of hardship with nothing but stubbornness and a compass. Whether she’s navigating the Amazon’s labyrinthine rivers or haggling in Moroccan souks, Jenkins’ adventures feel less like tourist tales and more like dispatches from the front lines of curiosity, where every bruise and blister is a badge of authenticity. This book is for anyone who’s ever craved a life less ordinary—and had the moxie to chase it. Narrator Barbara Jenkins delivers her own story with the unfiltered cadence of a storyteller who’s lived every word, her delivery shifting seamlessly between the hushed awe of wilderness and the sharp wit of a woman who’s seen it all—and isn’t afraid to laugh at the absurdity of it. The production, too, leans into the raw: breathy sighs, the occasional rustle of pages, even the creak of an old door in the recorded space all conspire to make you feel like you’re huddled in a cabin with her, listening to a friend spin tales by firelight.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I was skeptical when I heard Barbara Jenkins would narrate her own memoir—too often, authors either overact or under-deliver, their voices betraying self-consciousness. Jenkins, thankfully, is the exception. She reads like she’s forgotten the mic exists, her voice a living thing that grows warmer, rougher, or more measured depending on the moment. There’s a tactile quality to her narration that’s rare: when she describes the Amazon’s humidity, you can hear the moisture in her breath; when she recalls near-misses with muggers in Delhi, her voice drops to a conspiratorial hush, and you lean in closer. The pacing, too, is masterful—Jenkins never rushes, even when the plot demands it, and her pauses become their own kind of punctuation, letting the gravity of her stories sink in. That said, there were two hiccups. First, her pronunciation of some non-English words (particularly Spanish and Arabic terms) occasionally wobbles, though never enough to derail understanding. Second, the audiobook’s production isn’t pristine—there’s a faint hum in the background of a few chapters that’s more noticeable in quiet moments, though it never becomes distracting. But these are quibbles. What lingers is Jenkins’ unapologetic voice, both literally and figuratively. She doesn’t just tell you about survival; she makes you feel the dirt under her nails, the exhaustion in her bones, the triumph in her step. This isn’t a polished adventure—it’s a lived one, and that’s exactly why it works.
