Take the convenience store robbery scene: Free’s timing turns what could’ve been a clichéd setup into something darkly funny and weirdly sweet, his voice dripping with the exact right mix of panic and flirtation. That’s the magic of this book—it balances absurdity and sincerity without ever feeling tonally whiplashed. The story itself is a slow burn in the best way, though not without its stumbles. Bell’s dialogue is razor-sharp, especially in the banter between the love interests, but the middle act drags slightly with subplots that feel more like detours than depth.
