About This Audiobook

Daren Morin has died exactly twice—at least, according to the kingdom’s official records. What they don’t know is that each death was a lie, and every resurrection came with a price. A.P. Gore’s *Spell Breaker* isn’t just another grimdark fantasy; it’s a razor-sharp revenge tale where the underdog doesn’t just pick up a sword, he dismantles the entire magical system that forged it. Gore’s worldbuilding is dense but never opaque, weaving a lattice of political intrigue, forbidden sorcery, and the kind of moral gray where no spell is free. If you’ve ever wanted a protagonist who’s less ‘chosen one’ and more ‘conveniently disposable problem,’ this is your book.

The narration by Matt Hicks and Erin Bateman crackles with electric tension. Hicks delivers Daren’s sardonic, survivalist wit like a live wire, while Bateman’s icy aristocrats and gravel-voiced thugs slither through the dialogue with perfect menace. Their chemistry elevates every betrayal into a full-body punch, and the production team ensures every spell crack, sword swing, and whispered incantation lands with cinematic clarity. This isn’t a fantasy where magic feels like a Disney cleanse—it’s gritty, exhausting, and occasionally gorgeous, like a blade dragged across your ribs.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *Spell Breaker* expecting another ‘chosen one’ retread, but Gore’s refusal to coddle the reader is what sold me. Daren isn’t a hero; he’s a man who’s learned to scavenge power from the corpses of his enemies, and the audiobook’s narration sells that brutality with relish. Matt Hicks’ performance is the secret weapon here—his Daren is all clipped laughter and exhausted sarcasm, a guy who’s been broken so many times he’s practically made of scar tissue. Erin Bateman’s range is impressive, too, flipping from venomous noblewomen to hulking enforcers without missing a beat. That said, the first act drags a little as Gore crams in lore about the ‘Spell Breaker’ magic system, and the middle third could lose a few redundant chase scenes. But Gore’s world is so vivid—imagine a fantasy version of cyberpunk noir, where alchemy labs double as black markets and assassins trade in blood debts—that the pacing lulls fade fast. The finale is worth the slog, though: a heist-style climax where Daren weaponizes the very system hunting him. The production quality is top-tier, too, with directional audio that makes you flinch when spells ricochet off stone. If you want fantasy without the fairy-tale sheen, this is your audiobook.
