About This Audiobook

Set in the fragile aftermath of the Clone Wars, *Star Wars: Sanctuary* follows the Bad Batch as they trade blasters for blueprints, attempting to help rebuild the island refuge of Pabu. Unlike the high-octane military missions of their past, this story leans into civilian challenges—infrastructure, trust, and diplomacy—with mixed results. Lamar Giles attempts to stretch the crew beyond combat roles, but the narrative often stumbles under the weight of its own good intentions, substituting tension with bureaucratic filler and undercooked conflicts. The emotional beats land softly, and Omega’s coming-of-age subplot never quite ignites, leaving the story feeling more like a placeholder than a progression. Marc Thompson returns as narrator, bringing his signature vocal precision and deep familiarity with Star Wars cadence. His performance remains a highlight—distinctive voices for each Batch member, crisp delivery during action, and subtle tonal shifts that ground the quieter moments. Yet even his seasoned delivery can’t rescue the sluggish midsection, where worldbuilding bogs down into exposition. The audiobook format amplifies the script’s pacing issues, making some stretches feel interminable. While franchise loyalists may appreciate the canonical expansion, listeners seeking a gripping standalone adventure will likely find *Sanctuary* more dutiful than dazzling.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit—I wanted to like *Sanctuary*. The idea of the Bad Batch navigating reconstruction rather than raids is fresh in theory. But in practice, the story lacks urgency. The plot revolves around political squabbles and community projects, which sounds noble, but plays out like a municipal town hall meeting in galaxy far, far away. The action is sparse, and when it comes, it feels rushed compared to the long stretches of dialogue about water filtration systems. Omega gets more screen time, which is welcome, but her development is hampered by preachy dialogue that doesn’t sound like a teenager, even in a sci-fi context. Marc Thompson’s narration is, as always, technically flawless. He modulates Hunter’s gruff concern, Tech’s clinical tone, and Wrecker’s boisterous energy with ease. But even he can’t inject momentum into scenes that simply don’t build. The sound design is minimal—no immersive effects or music—which makes the audiobook feel flat at times. One specific misstep: a late-breaking betrayal that’s meant to be shocking but is telegraphed 10 chapters early. For a book about change, *Sanctuary* feels stuck in neutral.
