Keith McCarthy’s performance is the standout here, turning what could’ve been a dry military sci-fi tale into something visceral. His voice for the grizzled captain, Elias Voss, carries the kind of gravitas that makes you believe in the Empire’s last stand, while his portrayal of the younger pilots—especially the reckless but loyal Jax—cracks with youthful energy. The production is crisp, with subtle sound design that immerses you in the cockpit of a starfighter without overpowering the dialogue. That said, the book stumbles in its middle act, where the political maneuvering of the Imperial remnants feels undercooked. A subplot involving the xenos’ motivations is glossed over, leaving their threat feeling more like a plot device than a genuine existential dread. The ending, while satisfying, wraps up a little too neatly for a story about a crumbling empire—though that might just be my personal bias against happy(ish) endings in space operas. Still, Herron’s writing shines in the quieter moments, like when Voss reflects on his past mistakes or when a minor character’s brief moment of bravery steals the scene.
