Mindy Kennedy nails the no-BS tone of this story. Her voice crackles with Jill’s simmering rage and slow-burning vulnerability, shifting seamlessly between sharp sarcasm and raw pain. The narration sells the grimy edge of the setting—every creak of a ship’s hull, every muttered curse in alien slang feels tactile. That said, the story’s pacing stumbles in the middle act; there’s a sluggish stretch where the physical danger fades into repetitive set pieces. Still, Kennedy’s performance elevates those moments by keeping Jill’s defiance front and center, even during quieter exchanges. The slow-burn romance has real heat, but it never glosses over the scars both leads carry. A strong outing for fans of morally complex sci-fi romances who crave bite alongside the sweet.
