Stepbrother Romance: Our Darkest Secret, A Steamy Forbidden Love

I’ll admit, I approached this audiobook with low expectations—and it both confirmed and slightly exceeded them. At just 45 minutes, 'Our Darkest Secret' is less a love story and more a mood piece: all atmosphere and tension, with very little substance beneath. That said, Nikki Diamond’s narration is where this production earns its keep. Her voice is sultry and controlled, perfectly calibrated to the story’s pulse. She doesn’t overact, which works in the material’s favor—there’s a restraint in her delivery that makes the characters feel almost believably conflicted, even when the writing doesn’t. The pacing is breakneck, though. Important emotional beats—like the moment Collin realizes his attraction—are rushed, leaving little room for introspection. The story leans hard on the 'we’re not blood' justification, but doesn’t explore any of the real family fallout that would accompany such a revelation. There’s zero tension beyond the physical, which is a missed opportunity. Also, the pool scene—the book’s central metaphor—feels underdeveloped, more a cue for lust than symbolic depth. Still, if you’re in the mood for a short, steamy listen without emotional labor, this might scratch the itch. Just don’t expect depth.
