Stitched Up Heart

I’ll admit, I was skeptical going into *Stitched Up Heart*. Military romances often lean into clichés—gritty heroes with hearts of gold, heroines who need rescuing, and a plot that’s more about the feels than the fight. But Deaton flips the script in ways that left me audibly gasping more than once. Take Bree, for example: she’s not some meek waif waiting for a man to save her. She’s a woman who’s seen too much death to believe in easy fixes, and her dynamic with Cole is less a slow burn and more a controlled explosion. Their banter is sharp, their chemistry undeniable, but the real pull is watching two broken people try—not always successfully—to stitch themselves back together. Hayden Bishop’s performance is a masterclass in emotional restraint. She nails Bree’s weary pragmatism and Cole’s simmering fury, but where she truly shines is in the quiet moments. A single, trembling pause between words? A voice that cracks just enough to betray unspoken pain? Bishop makes those moments feel devastatingly real. That said, the audiobook isn’t flawless. The handful of secondary characters—particularly Cole’s overbearing father—feel underdeveloped, their motivations sketched in shorthand. And while the pacing is generally strong, the final act rushes through some critical emotional beats. But these are minor quibbles in a story that otherwise delivers exactly what it promises: a romance that’s equal parts heartbreak and hope, told with unflinching honesty.
