I’ll admit, I went into *Storm Clouds* expecting another ‘pew-pew’ mercenary romp, but Kennedy subverted my expectations within the first hour. The story kicks off with the aftermath of a war nobody *really* won, and the Horsemen—usually the ones pulling triggers—are now stuck mediating between species who’d rather eat each other than share a trade route. The pacing is deliberate, almost methodical, but that’s the point: this is a book about the *cost* of peace, not the thrill of war. When the action does hit (and oh, it *hits*), it’s brutal and brief, like a knife fight in a back alley. McLaren’s narration sells it all; his gravelly voice gives even the most bureaucratic scenes a sense of looming violence. His timing is impeccable—especially in the banter between the Horsemen’s leaders, where a paused syllable can feel like a drawn pistol. That said, this isn’t a flawless listen. Kennedy’s worldbuilding is dense, and while the codex entries at the start of chapters help, I found myself rewinding a few times to parse the political factions (the *Besquith*? The *Xiq’tal*? Keep a notepad handy). And while the female characters are competent, they’re often sidelined in favor of the gruff, male-dominated Horsemen—missed potential in a series that otherwise feels fresh. Still, the audiobook’s production is top-tier: no distracting volume spikes, and the rare sound effects (a docking clamp hiss, a distant explosion) are used sparingly but effectively. If you love sci-fi that’s more *The Expanse* than *Star Wars*—where the real battles are fought in boardrooms and the body count has consequences—this is your next listen. Just don’t expect easy answers.
