The protagonist, Kael, isn’t some wide-eyed farm boy; he’s a survivor who’s already lost everything, and that hardness makes his victories satisfying in a way that feels earned. The magic system is refreshingly brutal: summoning creatures isn’t just about cool factor, but about cost-benefit calculations where hesitation gets you killed. Renfroe’s fight scenes are some of the best I’ve heard in fantasy—short, vicious, and spatially clear, so you’re never lost in the chaos. Andrew Tell’s performance is a masterclass in restraint. He doesn’t over-embroider voices (a pet peeve of mine in fantasy narration), but his Kael carries the weight of a man who’s seen too much, and his delivery during the Hunt’s announcements is chillingly detached—like a referee calling plays in a gladiator pit. My only critique? The mid-book lull drags slightly as Kael strategizes, and a few side characters blur together in the audio format. Also, the sound mixing occasionally makes spell effects *too* subtle—you’ll want headphones to catch the nuances. But these are quibbles.
