About This Audiobook

Ingrid Seymour’s *Supernatural Academy: Freshman Witch* is a snarky, high-stakes introduction to a world where magic isn’t just real—it’s a weapon. Our protagonist, a no-nonsense teen who’d rather trust a lie detector than a spellbook, gets thrust into the chaos when a stolen item vanishes mid-arrest, leaving her with more questions than a séance. The book’s strength lies in its refusal to take itself too seriously: snappy dialogue, a healthy dose of sarcasm, and a magic system that feels less like a fairy tale and more like a back-alley brawl. It’s *Harry Potter* meets *The Paper Chase* with a side of supernatural hazing, all wrapped in a plot that zips along like a cursed broomstick. Seymour’s world-building is sharp, avoiding the pitfalls of overwrought lore by keeping the stakes personal—literally. The magic here isn’t just a tool; it’s a trap, and the real story is about untangling the lies we tell ourselves to survive the mess we’re stuck in.

Kasi Hollowell’s narration is the cherry on top of this audiobook sundae. Her voice crackles with the kind of sass you’d expect from a witch who’d rather hex a teacher than hand in an essay. She nails the protagonist’s skepticism and the supporting cast’s larger-than-life personalities, from the sly mentor to the rival who’s equal parts charm and chaos. Hollowell’s pacing keeps the energy high, even during the heavier moments, and her ability to switch between dry wit and genuine tension makes this feel more like eavesdropping on a late-night dorm chat than a traditional audiobook. If you’re tired of YA fantasy that takes itself too seriously, this is your escape hatch.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *Supernatural Academy: Freshman Witch* expecting another forgettable YA fantasy, but Seymour and Hollowell turned it into a binge-worthy ride. Kasi Hollowell’s narration is the star here—she delivers a performance that’s equal parts hilarious and immersive, with a voice that’s instantly recognizable as the protagonist’s “I don’t believe in any of this BS” energy. The audiobook’s real triumph is its pacing; even at 9+ hours, it never drags, thanks to a plot that’s as much about the personal fallout of magic as it is about spell-slinging. The magic system, while not groundbreaking, is executed with a refreshing lack of pretension. Instead of endless exposition, Seymour drops hints that make the world feel lived-in rather than contrived. That said, the book isn’t without flaws. The romance subplot feels tacked on, like it was shoehorned in to satisfy a checklist rather than serve the story. And while Hollowell’s performance is stellar, there were moments where her pacing stumbled slightly during expository scenes, making them drag just enough to pull me out of the action. But these are minor quibbles in an otherwise addictive listen. If you’re a fan of snarky heroines, found-family tropes with bite, and magic that feels more like a curse than a gift, this audiobook will have you hooked from the first hex.
