About This Audiobook

Samantha Lyon doesn’t just recount the grotesque acts of serial killers—she dissects the twisted psyches that birthed them. This isn’t another true-crime laundry list of horrors; it’s a psychological exploration of how some of history’s most monstrous individuals convinced themselves their evil was divinely ordained, mythological, or even rational. From the self-proclaimed werewolf Peter Stumpp to the pious butcher Albert Fish, Lyon peels back the layers of delusion, religious fanaticism, and unchecked sadism that fueled these killers. The result is a chilling reminder that the most terrifying monsters aren’t the ones lurking in shadows—they’re the ones who believe they’re doing God’s work.

The audiobook’s strength lies in William Roberts’ narration, which balances clinical detachment with a creeping sense of unease. His voice doesn’t sensationalize; it lingers, forcing the listener to sit with the horror rather than look away. The pacing is relentless, mirroring the obsessive nature of the killers themselves, but it never feels rushed. Lyon’s research shines through, stitching together historical records, psychiatric evaluations, and firsthand accounts into a narrative that’s as informative as it is unsettling.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I approached *Supernatural Serial Killers* with skepticism—how much could a book about murderers *really* differ from the usual true-crime glut? The answer? A lot. Lyon’s focus on the killers’ delusions rather than their body counts elevates this above the pack. Roberts’ narration is the secret weapon here; his dry, measured tone makes the grotesque details feel even more disturbing, like a coroner calmly describing a crime scene while the lights flicker ominously overhead. The chapter on the ‘Vampire of Düsseldorf’ is particularly electric, weaving in historical context about post-WWI paranoia to explain why Peter Kürten’s crimes felt like a dark prophecy to the public. That said, the audiobook isn’t without flaws. The first three chapters drag slightly, feeling more like an academic primer than the gripping descent into madness I expected. And while Roberts’ voice is ideally suited for this material, his occasional mispronunciations of German or French names (looking at you, ‘Stumpp’) jolted me out of immersion more than once. Still, these are minor quibbles. By the time you reach the final case—where Lyon contrasts a killer’s supernatural delusions with the very real, bureaucratic horror of his capture—the audiobook earns every one of its 11 hours. If you’ve ever wondered how monsters justify their monstrosity, this is the audiobook that will haunt you long after the last chapter ends.
