I’ll admit upfront: I went into *Swords and Deviltry* expecting routine sword-and-sorcery fluff. What I got was something far grittier and more compelling—a series of tales that feel like the literary equivalent of a late-night bar fight in a city where the ale is watered down but the danger is very real. Neil Gaiman’s introduction frames Leiber as a revolutionary, and it’s easy to see why: these stories don’t just follow the hero’s journey; they subvert it, tossing Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser into scenarios that range from darkly humorous to outright brutal. The Mouser’s cunning and Fafhrd’s brute strength play off each other perfectly, making their dynamic the heart of the collection. Jonathan Davis’s narration is a standout, capturing the characters’ personalities with precision—his Fafhrd is a thunderous presence, while his Mouser drips with sarcasm and mischief. That said, the audiobook’s 7-hour runtime occasionally feels padded, especially in Fafhrd’s longer monologues. Some listeners might wish Davis varied his delivery more, as the same vocal tics can recur across chapters. But these are minor quibbles for a collection that delivers atmosphere, action, and enough moral ambiguity to keep even seasoned fantasy fans on their toes. If you’re after polished, epic fantasy, this isn’t it—but if you want something raw, clever, and steeped in the grime of a living, breathing world, *Swords and Deviltry* delivers in spades.
