I’ll admit, I started *Terminus* skeptical—another cosmic horror tale where ‘eldritch’ is the only adjective that suffices? But Bernd Reheuser’s narration sold me on the first chapter. His voice carries this weirdly soothing authority, like a professor calmly explaining why we’re all doomed, which makes the sudden shifts into primal terror that much more jarring. The story’s reliance on ‘found documents’ and radio transcripts could’ve felt gimmicky, but Clines weaves them into a seamless mystery, doling out clues just fast enough to keep you paranoid without overwhelming the plot. That said, the third act’s time jumps disrupted the tension for me; I found myself replaying sections to reorient, which isn’t ideal for an audiobook where your eyes aren’t glued to a timeline. Where this audiobook excels is in its atmosphere. Reheuser’s performance of the ‘tentacle logic’—descriptions of impossible geometries and non-Euclidean space—is downright hypnotic. The sheer physicality of the horror (imagine something the size of a continent unfurling from the ocean floor) translates beautifully through his vocal work, especially during the book’s most claustrophobic scenes. My only real gripe? The ending leans hard into ‘it was all a simulation’ tropes, a choice that felt thematically cheap given how seriously Clines treats his premise. Still, by then, the dread had already seeped into my bones. If you crave horror that’s less about jump scares and more about the slow unraveling of what you thought you knew, *Terminus* delivers—just don’t expect to sleep easy afterward.
