About This Audiobook

Meet Max Remus—a gay werewolf who’s 100% done with destiny. While his pack’s obsessed with finding their fated mates, Max just wants to sketch, snack on his dad’s legendary steak sandwiches, and avoid the whole mate-hunt circus. But fate, as always, has other plans, especially when the Blue Moon Festival arrives with its neon-lit chaos and pack politics. Penny Jessup crafts a vibrant queer YA romp where humor, heart, and supernatural stakes collide, all filtered through Max’s dry, defiant lens. The worldbuilding crackles with playful nods to wolf culture and small-town queer life, making this feel like *Heartstopper* meets *Teen Wolf* by way of a snarky indie comic.

This isn’t your average fated-mates trope. Jessup’s prose strikes a balance between snappy dialogue and tender introspection, while Michael Mola’s narration is the secret weapon—his raspy, expressive delivery turns Max’s sardonic one-liners into aural gold and his emotional beats into gut punches. The pacing never drags, even as the stakes ramp up from awkward festival flirting to full-blown supernatural showdowns. If you crave queer YA that’s equal parts fluffy and fierce, with a protagonist who refuses to bow to tradition, this is your hive-mate.

Editor's Review ★★★★

AudioBook Atlas

I went into *The Alpha’s Son* expecting another tired fated-mates story, but Penny Jessup flipped the script with Max—a queer werewolf who’d rather draw weird creatures in his sketchbook than obsess over destiny. Michael Mola’s narration is the real star here; his deadpan delivery of Max’s sarcastic inner monologue made me laugh out loud, while the emotional climbs (especially during a charged moment at the Blue Moon Festival) left me breathless. The audiobook’s 9-hour runtime flew by because the energy never dipped, even during worldbuilding-heavy scenes. That said, the side characters occasionally blurred together—Max’s bestie and his dad’s personalities felt a bit undercooked compared to the protagonist’s sharp wit. The climax also wraps up a tad too neatly for my taste, like the story hit pause on the chaos just when it needed more risk. Still, the romance’s slow burn is satisfying, and Max’s refusal to play by pack rules gives the whole tale a fresh edge. If you’re in the mood for queer werewolf fiction that’s more *Scott Pilgrim* than *Twilight*, this is a binge-worthy listen with heart, humor, and a hero worth rooting for.
