Michael Beck’s narration is the secret weapon of this audiobook. He nails the Southern drawls of the characters, particularly the smug corporate lawyers and the weary plaintiffs, making each line feel like it’s being spoken directly to you. The production quality is crisp, with subtle sound design that subtly enhances tension during key moments, like the hushed conversations in dimly lit boardrooms or the thunderous silence of a courthouse after a shocking verdict. That said, the story stumbles slightly in the final act. Grisham piles on too many coincidences—some nearly laughable—to tie up loose ends, which risks undermining the otherwise bleak realism of the narrative. A tighter resolution would’ve made this a flawless listen. Still, Beck’s performance and Grisham’s unflinching cynicism make *The Appeal* a binge-worthy descent into a system where the wrong people always seem to win—until, perhaps, they don’t.
