About This Audiobook

Hanne’s *The Battle for Korelia* isn’t just another portal fantasy—it’s a brutally realistic riff on what happens when an ordinary guy gets yanked into a medieval warzone and forced to play king. No chosen-one prophecies here; our protagonist, a mid-tier gamer with zero survival skills, has to scramble his way up from refugee to reluctant warlord by sheer dumb luck and sheer stubbornness. The worldbuilding is relentlessly immersive, dripping with the kind of gory detail that makes you smell the smoke and feel the weight of a sword that’s way heavier than it looks. Hanne avoids the trap of making magic or politics too neat, which keeps the stakes feeling raw and unpredictable. If you’ve ever wondered what a gamer’s skills would *really* look like in a world that didn’t give a damn about respawns, this is your book.

The pacing is tight enough to keep the 13-hour runtime from ever dragging, but the audiobook version—narrated by Matthew Bridges with a voice that’s equal parts gravel and gravitas—elevates it further. Bridges nails the exhausted frustration of a guy who just wanted to play *World of Warcraft* and got stuck leading an army, his tone shifting seamlessly from sarcastic wit to bone-deep weariness. The production is crisp, with no distracting artifacts, letting the story’s momentum pull you through. Korelia feels lived-in, not just because of the lore, but because the characters act like they’ve got their own agendas—even the ones you’re supposed to root for.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit I was skeptical about a gamer-turned-warlord story, but *The Battle for Korelia* won me over in the first two hours. Matthew Bridges’ narration is the secret weapon here—his voice has a gritty edge that sells the protagonist’s exhaustion and reluctant command perfectly, like he’s a guy who’s been running on caffeine and bad decisions for weeks. The story drags you in with the kind of immersive detail that makes you forget you’re listening to an audiobook; the mud on the boots, the way the bread tastes when it’s the first real meal in days. Hanne’s world feels brutal but believable, not some sanitized fantasy kingdom where everyone’s got a noble cause. The politics aren’t dumbed down, and the battles aren’t glorified—just brutal, messy, and exhausting, which is refreshing. That said, the middle act drags a bit. There’s a lull in the second act where the warlord-to-be spends more time politicking than fighting, which slows the momentum. And while Bridges is excellent, there were a few scenes where his tone tipped into over-enunciation, like he was trying too hard to differentiate characters. But those quibbles fade fast when the action kicks back in. By the final act, I was fully invested in whether Korelia would survive its own infighting. If you want a fantasy that doesn’t treat war like a video game, this delivers.
