Greenberg’s narration elevates it further—a performance that oscillates between whispers and roars with the precision of a metronome set to terror. His Cipher feels like the kind of protagonist you’d root for in a better world, but here, his vulnerability is a liability, and Greenberg sells that helplessness with a whispery, almost fragile delivery that made me lean in closer to the speakers. The tower systems are the real stars; Simmons avoids the laziness of ‘one per theme’ clichés by giving each its own *vibe*—the Yellow Tower’s obsession with mirrors and perception, the Blue’s labyrinthine, waterlogged halls where sound travels wrong. It’s a masterclass in environmental storytelling. That said, the book isn’t flawless. The mid-section sags slightly under the weight of its own lore, and some tower reveals feel rushed, as if Simmons was aware of the runtime but hadn’t earned the digressions. The ending, while satisfying, leans into the ‘big twist’ trope a bit too hard, though Greenberg’s delivery of the final monologue almost sells it. Production-wise, the audio is crisp, with subtle sound design (distant echoes, creaking metal) that subliminally ratchets up the tension. If you’re the kind of listener who likes their fantasy with a side of psychological horror and a narrator who doesn’t treat YA as a downgrade, *The Blue Tower* is a dark, immersive ride you won’t want to exit.
