Traymore’s writing excels in the quiet moments—the way Kate’s hands shake as she pours wine after a lie, or how Ryan’s charm curdles into something sinister when the stakes rise. The novel’s first half is a meticulous setup, almost *too* patient, but the payoff is worth it: by the time the bluff of the title becomes literal, you’re so invested in Kate’s warped logic that the climax hits like a gut punch. Meghan Kelly’s narration is *exceptional*—her pacing is deliberate, letting the silence between lines carry as much weight as the words themselves. That said, her voice for Ryan occasionally veers into caricature, especially in the early chapters, which briefly pulled me out of the story. The sound design is minimalist (no ambient lake sounds, thankfully), but the occasional abrupt shift in tone during flashbacks could’ve been smoothed with a subtler transition. Still, these are minor quibbles. What lingers is the unsettling question Traymore poses: *How well do you really know the person you’d die for?* If you love morally ambiguous protagonists and narrators who can make a grocery list sound ominous, this is your next listen.
