The Body Scout

Greg Chun’s narration is the glue that holds *The Body Scout* together, and he delivers in spades. His voice for Frank, the protagonist, is a perfect blend of gravel and weariness—imagine Sam Spade if he’d spent the last twenty years getting his liver swapped out for a discount model. Chun’s delivery sells the noir tone without veering into parody, and his ability to switch between Frank’s razor-sharp internal monologue and the sleazy patter of side characters is nothing short of masterful. The pacing of the audiobook is tight, too: the story moves at a clip that keeps your pulse elevated, though I’ll admit that a few of the mid-book infodumps about body-mod culture could’ve been trimmed for flow without losing any flavor. The production value is high, with subtle sound design that enhances immersion—think the hum of a black-market clinic’s machinery or the distant bass of a club’s bass line bleeding through a wall. That said, the final act’s resolution feels a tad too tidy for a world this messy, a small misstep in an otherwise relentlessly inventive narrative. But when Michel leans into the absurdity—like a detective interrogating a suspect whose face is currently on backorder from a rogue surgeon—the audiobook shines. If you’re craving a sci-fi thriller with brains, muscle, and just enough body horror to keep you squirming, this is your next obsession.
