About This Audiobook

Simon Beckett’s *The Calling of the Grave* isn’t just another forensic thriller—it’s a masterclass in turning decomposition into dread. This isn’t about flashy autopsies or CSI-style tech; it’s about the slow, creeping horror of what bodies reveal when the earth gives them up. Dr. David Hunter, Beckett’s recurring forensic anthropologist, is drawn into a case where a skeletal hand—just a hand—clutched in the roots of an ancient tree becomes the first clue in a puzzle that’s as much about rural superstition as it is about science. The audiobook thrives on atmosphere: fog-choked forests, villages where secrets fester like rot, and a protagonist whose own ghosts refuse to stay buried.

Jonathan Keeble’s narration is the perfect scalpel for this material—precise, unhurried, and laced with a quiet menace that makes even procedural details feel ominous. His Hunter isn’t a swaggering hero but a man worn thin by loss, his voice roughening with exhaustion when the case cuts too close. What sets this apart from Beckett’s earlier works (or the forthcoming *Chemistry of Death* adaptation) is its folktale undertow: the way the investigation tangles with local myths, leaving you wondering if the real horror is human or something older, hungrier. For listeners who crave their mysteries steeped in gothic unease—not just solved, but *felt*—this is a standout.

AudioBook Atlas

I’ll admit, I approached *The Calling of the Grave* with cautious optimism. Beckett’s David Hunter series has always delivered on forensic grit, but this one promised something darker, more rooted in the uncanny. And for the most part, it delivers—though not without a few stumbles. Keeble’s narration is a huge part of why it works: his delivery is measured, almost clinical, which makes the moments of violence or revelation hit harder. When Hunter examines that first skeletal hand, Keeble’s voice drops to a near-whisper, and suddenly you’re leaning in, skin prickling. The production is clean, with no distracting edits, though I did notice a slight volume dip in Chapter 12 that pulled me out of the moment. The story itself is a slow burn, and that’s both its strength and its weakness. Beckett excels at weaving forensic detail with psychological tension—Hunter’s own trauma (the loss of his family) mirrors the decay he studies, and the parallel is haunting. But the pacing drags in the middle, particularly during the village politics subplot, which feels like a detour from the central mystery. And while the folklore elements are compelling, the resolution leans a bit too hard on coincidence for my taste. Still, the final act is worth the wait: a confrontation in a storm-lashed churchyard that had me glancing over my shoulder. If you love your thrillers moody, methodical, and tinged with the supernatural (without full-on crossing into horror), this is a solid pick—just don’t expect breakneck speed.
