The Case of the Ghost of Christmas Morning

There’s a reason this audiobook is racking up near-perfect ratings—Tim Bruce’s narration is the reason to press play. His voice shifts effortlessly between the gravel of a weary detective, the clipped precision of a war veteran, and the icy disdain of a woman who’s convinced she’s seen it all. The real star is his timing, especially in the quieter moments: a sip of whiskey lingering too long, a silence stretched just past polite. Fitzsimmons’ plot is clever, but it’s Bruce who makes the dialogue *sing*—whether he’s delivering a dry quip or letting a character’s vulnerability crack through. That said, the pacing stumbles once or twice in the middle act, where the clues pile up faster than ornaments on a tree. The resolution is satisfying, but I wish the emotional payoff between the suspects had been given more room to breathe. Still, if you love mysteries that use Christmas as a backdrop without sugarcoating the human heart, this one’s a gift.
