I’ll be honest: *The Chosen One* frustrated me as much as it fascinated me. On paper, it’s the kind of hard-SF I usually devour—time loops with actual scientific stakes, a protagonist who’s more engineer than hero, and a premise that asks *what if the multiverse was a spreadsheet?* But in execution, it often feels like listening to someone debug code for hours, only to hit the same fatal error. James’s emotional arc is buried under layers of technical exposition, and while Louise Cooksey’s voice replica sells his growing desperation (her delivery of the line *“I recalculated. It didn’t work.”* is haunting), the performance can’t fully compensate for the story’s glacial pacing. The first act is a masterclass in tension—Hartwich builds a claustrophobic, end-of-the-world vibe that had me leaning in. But by hour 12, the repetitive cycles start to feel less like a narrative choice and more like padding. The “twists” are telegraphed so far in advance that when they land, they thud rather than explode. And while the hard-SF elements (black holes as plot devices, entropy as a villain) are ambitious, they sometimes read like a Wikipedia deep dive interrupted by sudden bursts of melodrama. The production itself is flawless—crisp audio, consistent pacing—but even that can’t mask the fact that this book demands *work* from its audience. If you love sci-fi that prioritizes ideas over entertainment, you’ll find plenty to chew on. If you need characters to care about or a plot that moves, though? You might end up hitting ‘skip’ like James hitting ‘reset.’
