The first half drags slightly in world-building—some side characters blur together until their roles become clearer—but Bauer’s performance keeps the momentum going. The real standout is how the audiobook handles Claudia’s early humiliation: Bauer’s voice cracks just enough during her lowest moments to make her triumphs feel earned, not cartoonish. The later court scenes are electric, with Bauer nailing the venom in aristocratic dialogue. My only critique? The love interest arrives late in the game, and his backstory feels underdeveloped—like the author realized halfway through they needed a shred of romance to balance the ruthlessness. Still, production quality is top-tier, with no distracting cuts or muffled audio, and the runtime flies by when Bauer’s in the zone. This isn’t just a romance or fantasy—it’s a masterclass in vengeful ambition, and I’m already jonesing for Volume 2.
