I went into *Just for Fins* expecting another lighthearted mermaid flufffest, but Childs and Bauer turned it into something with real emotional stakes—something I didn’t see coming. Bauer’s performance is a standout, especially her knack for nailing Lily’s dry, sarcastic inner monologue while keeping the rest of the cast distinct. The merfolk side characters, from Lily’s mischievous brother to her stubborn best friend, all get their moment to shine, and Bauer gives each one a personality that makes the underwater world feel alive. The romance, while predictable in its beats, is saved by the banter and the way Lily’s decisions feel earned rather than contrived. That said, this isn’t flawless. The world-building occasionally skates by on charm alone, leaving some political dynamics between merfolk factions feeling underdeveloped. And while Bauer’s narration is fantastic overall, a few of the male voices land a little too young, which can be jarring when the story itself deals with serious themes like legacy and belonging. Still, those quirks are minor in an audiobook that’s as fun as it is immersive. If you’re craving a YA romance that balances humor, heart, and a healthy dose of underwater drama, *Just for Fins* delivers—with style.
