Yet within 20 minutes, I was hooked—not by battles (though they’re brilliantly rendered) but by Heyer’s *voice*. This isn’t a sanitized legend; it’s a story about a bastard son who’s painfully aware of his own flaws, and a woman who sees through his bluster. George Weightman’s narration is a masterclass in restraint. He doesn’t *perform* the characters so much as *embody* them: William’s Norman-accented English is rough but never exaggerated, and Matilde’s quiet authority crackles in every syllable. The production is flawless—no jarring edits, no volume spikes—just a seamless immersion into 11th-century Normandy. That said, this isn’t a book for everyone. The pacing in the middle act drags slightly as Heyer indulges in political maneuvering (a few scenes of feudal haggling could’ve been tightened), and Weightman’s delivery, while superb, occasionally leans *too* measured during high-stakes moments—I found myself wishing for a touch more fire in the climactic confrontation. But these are quibbles. What lingers is Heyer’s fearless portrayal of a man who’s both monster and martyr, and a romance that’s less about swooning than survival. If you love historical fiction that’s as intellectually satisfying as it is emotionally gripping—think Dorothy Dunnett’s *Lymond Chronicles* but with Heyer’s wit—this audiobook is a triumph.
