I dove into 'The Dark Times: Part One - The Beginning' with a mix of excitement and skepticism, given the crowded post-apocalyptic fiction landscape. Virtual Voice's narration is commendable, bringing a sense of gravitas to the story. I appreciated how Young wove together the various group narratives, creating a rich tapestry of characters and motivations. However, at times the sheer number of groups and characters made it difficult to keep track, and I felt that a few more narrative signposts would have helped. The pacing is generally well-handled, although some sections felt a tad rushed. Overall, fans of complex, character-driven sci-fi will find much to enjoy here.
