The Deepest Dungeon Trilogy

But *The Deepest Dungeon* hooked me by the fifth chapter—not with epic loot drops, but with a guild that feels like a dysfunctional office team. Martin, the ‘leader,’ is less a hero and more a guy who showed up to the raid hungover, and Sims sells his exasperation with the timing of a comedian nailing a punchline. The narration is *that* good: Sims’ voice for the guild’s tank, a hulking orc named *Grakk*, is less ‘monstrous roar’ and more ‘tired line cook who’s seen some things,’ which somehow makes the combat scenes funnier. The pacing stumbles in the middle—Penman’s love for dungeon ecology means *a lot* of time on monster migration patterns (fascinating at first, tedious by hour 12). And while the satire of gig-work-as-adventure is biting, the trilogy’s ending leans too hard on abrupt twists that undercut the slow-burn character work. But the audio production? Flawless. Sims’ ability to voice a dozen distinct characters without slipping into caricature is remarkable, especially in crowded dialogue scenes. If you love your fantasy with a side of existential dread and a narrator who sounds like he’s two sips away from quitting the whole quest, this is your jam.
