As an editor, I have to admit I was swept up in the world of Jackaby from the very start. Nicola Barber's narration is a key part of this experience – her voice brings Abigail to life in a way that feels authentic and relatable. One of the things that sets this series apart is its unique blend of mystery, adventure, and humor. But what really makes The Dire King stand out is its emotional depth. Jackaby's relationships with Abigail and his other friends are nuanced and multi-layered, adding a richness to the story that's all too rare in this genre. My one critique would be that, at times, the supporting cast can feel a bit underdeveloped – I would have loved to see more of some of the secondary characters. Still, this is a minor quibble in an otherwise engaging and thrilling listen. Overall, I highly recommend The Dire King to fans of mystery, adventure, and supernatural thrills.
