About This Audiobook

In The Drowned Cities, Paolo Bacigalupi crafts a gripping and atmospheric tale of survival in a post-apocalyptic world. Set in a future America ravaged by war and environmental disaster, the story follows Mahlia and Mouse, two young refugees who embark on a perilous journey to find hope in a desolate land. Bacigalupi's prose is as visceral as it is poetic, capturing the raw emotions and desperation of his characters in vivid detail. The world-building is equally impressive, painting a haunting portrait of a world where the natural order has been disrupted and humanity teeters on the brink of collapse.

Joshua Swanson brings this haunting world to life with his smooth and expressive narration. He conveys the intensity and emotion of the story with ease, drawing listeners into the world of the Drowned Cities. Swanson's pacing is well-balanced, making the audiobook an engaging and immersive listen from start to finish.

Editor's Review ★★★★

AudioBook Atlas

I was thoroughly entranced by The Drowned Cities, and I found myself drawn into the world Bacigalupi created like a moth to a flame. Joshua Swanson's narration is top-notch, bringing a sense of grit and desperation to the story that perfectly captures the tone of the novel. One of the things that really stood out to me was the way Bacigalupi explores the complexities of violence and trauma in a world where it's all too real. I was a bit disappointed that some of the supporting characters felt a bit one-dimensional at times, but overall the story is so compelling that it's hard to be too critical. One thing that did take me out of the story at times was the somewhat didactic tone that emerges in the latter half of the book. Bacigalupi's message about the dangers of unchecked technological progress and environmental destruction is undeniably important, but it felt a bit heavy-handed at times. That being said, the world-building is so rich and immersive that I found myself completely swept up in the story, even when the pacing slowed. Overall, I would highly recommend The Drowned Cities to fans of dystopian fiction and post-apocalyptic storytelling.
