About This Audiobook
Maurice Leblanc’s *Arsène Lupin* isn’t just a burglar—he’s a dandy, a prankster, and a genius who turns crime into high art. This collection of short stories (narrated with wicked relish by Mark Meadows) follows Lupin as he swindles aristocrats, humbles bumbling detectives, and leaves behind a trail of audacious wit. Unlike Sherlock Holmes’ cold logic or Poirot’s fastidiousness, Lupin thrives on chaos, disguises, and the sheer joy of the con. The audiobook’s brisk 6-hour runtime makes it perfect for listeners who want bite-sized, clever escapades without a sprawling commitment.
Meadows’ performance is the standout here: his Lupin is suave but never smug, his Ganimard (the perpetually outmaneuvered detective) a delightful mix of bluster and exasperation. The stories themselves are a masterclass in early 20th-century pulp—less about whodunit and more about *how’d-he-do-it*, with Lupin’s narratorial asides breaking the fourth wall like a rogue’s wink. If you love antiheroes who’re equal parts charming and infuriating, or if you’re tired of morose detectives, this is your antidote: crime as a game, played by a man who’s always three steps ahead."
"review": "I’ll admit, I went into *The Extraordinary Adventures of Arsène Lupin* expecting a French knockoff of Sherlock Holmes. What I got instead was something far more playful—a thief who’s less interested in the spoils than in the sport of it. Mark Meadows’ narration is the secret weapon here. His Lupin purrs with amusement, especially in stories like *The Arrest of Arsène Lupin*, where the gentleman-burglar lets himself get caught just to mess with the police. Meadows’ timing is impeccable, lingering on Lupin’s sly asides and then speeding up during chase scenes, making the audiobook feel like a heist movie in your ears.
That said, the stories aren’t all perfect. A few rely too heavily on Lupin’s *deus ex machina* disguises (seriously, how many times can one man pose as a Russian prince?), and the misogyny of the era occasionally grates—women here are either dupes, damsels, or both. But the best tales, like *The Queen’s Necklace*, balance humor and suspense so well that you’ll forgive the rough edges. The production is clean, with no distracting edits, though I wished for a touch more atmospheric music during the more dramatic moments. Still, if you’ve ever rooted for the villain in a caper film, this audiobook will feel like it was made for you. Just don’t blame me if you start eyeing your neighbor’s silverware afterward."
