I’ll admit: I went into *The Face* expecting another cat-and-mouse chase across Vance’s signature bizarre planets. Instead, I got a psychological horror story disguised as space opera. The *hadaul* sequences—where contestants literally gamble their faces in a mix of chess, gladiatorial combat, and social maneuvering—aren’t just set pieces. They’re the book’s throbbing heart, a grotesque metaphor for how Larque (and, let’s be honest, Gersen too) treats human lives as pawns. Vance’s prose is at its most razor-edged here, and Rudnicki’s narration leans into the discomfort. His delivery of Larque’s dialogue is *unsettling*—not because he hams it up, but because he makes the villain sound like your charming, slightly too observant uncle. That’s the real terror. My only critique? The middle act drags just enough to test your patience. Vance’s detours into Dar Sai’s mating rituals and political intrigues are fascinating, but they sometimes feel like they’re stalling the inevitable confrontation. And while Rudnicki’s pacing is generally impeccable, there are moments where the audiobook’s rhythm feels *too* measured, like a predator circling. But that might be the point. This isn’t a story about catharsis; it’s about the slow corrosion of the soul. If you love your sci-fi with a side of existential dread—and a narrator who can make a simple sentence sound like a threat—this is your audiobook.
