About This Audiobook

Theo Horesh doesn’t just analyze fascism—he anticipates it. This isn’t another retrospective dissection of totalitarian regimes past, but a chillingly prescient framework that maps how modern democracies unravel from within. Drawing on psychological, historical, and political currents, Horesh constructs a model that predicted Trump’s authoritarian drift years in advance, from family separations at the border to systemic erosion of civic norms. What sets this audiobook apart is its insistence that fascism isn’t a relic but a recurring social virus—and we’re currently in its incubation phase. Julian Pearson’s narration elevates the material with a steady, sober delivery that mirrors the book’s tone: urgent but never alarmist. His precision in pacing allows complex concepts—like the 'authoritarian trigger' or the psychology of mass submission—to land with clarity. Unlike dense academic tracts, this audiobook distills high-stakes theory into digestible, visceral insights. It’s particularly effective for listeners interested in political psychology or those uneasy about current global trends. If youre seeking not just explanation but early warning signs, this is essential listening.

Editor's Review ★★★★☆

AudioBook Atlas

I went into this audiobook skeptical—another political critique in a saturated field? But within the first 20 minutes, I was hooked. Horesh’s argument isn’t based on outrage but on a structured psychosocial model that feels both rigorous and terrifyingly plausible. Julian Pearson’s performance is perfectly matched to the content: calm, articulate, and authoritative without being detached. He doesn’t dramatize—because he doesn’t need to. The material speaks for itself. I especially appreciated how the book connects domestic U.S. politics to global authoritarian surges, making it more than just an American story. That said, the Yemen section, while important, felt slightly underdeveloped compared to the rest—more narrative depth there would’ve strengthened the argument. Also, the final chapter’s call to action, though well-intentioned, comes across as vague. But these are minor flaws in an otherwise compelling listen. The pacing is tight, the production clean, and the ideas linger long after. This isn’t comfort listening—it’s confrontation. And it’s one of the few political audiobooks I’ve replayed to absorb fully.
