The Fell Sword

I went into The Fell Sword expecting another epic fantasy slog, but what I got was a refreshingly sharp, almost clinical dissection of warfare and loyalty. Matthew Wolf’s narration is a masterclass in restraint—no melodrama, no overblown accents, just a steady, authoritative voice that makes the Red Knight feel like someone you’d actually follow into battle. His delivery mirrors the book’s tone: deliberate, intelligent, and unflinching. I especially appreciated how he handles the tactical sequences—the pacing slows just enough to let you absorb the strategy without losing momentum. That said, the novel’s meticulous attention to military detail, while impressive, occasionally bogs down the narrative. There were moments—especially in the middle third—where troop deployments and supply logistics stretched a little too thin, making it easy to drift away. And while I respect that magic is subtle here, it sometimes feels underbaked in a world this richly structured. Still, the strength of the character work and the authenticity of the combat more than compensate. This isn’t a fantasy for those chasing dragons or destiny—it’s for listeners who want to feel the mud, the cold, and the weight of command. As an audiobook, it’s immersive, demanding, and deeply satisfying.
