The Forest House

I went into The Forest House expecting lush fantasy and got something quieter but more enduring—a spiritual meditation disguised as historical fantasy. Rosalyn Landor’s performance is a masterclass in subtlety. She doesn’t dramatize Eilan’s visions so much as whisper them into being, using silence and breath to convey the sacred. Her voice has a cool, clear precision that suits the priestess’s world, and she handles the Celtic and Roman names with seamless grace. The first half of the audiobook is spellbinding: the slow pull of Eilan’s awakening, the eerie beauty of the Forest House rituals, and the quiet tension of forbidden love with Gaius—all rendered with emotional precision. That said, the pacing sags in the middle. There are long stretches of ceremonial detail and internal monologue that, while thematically rich, can blur together in audio format. I found myself drifting during one particularly drawn-out fertility rite. And while Bradley’s feminist reimagining of Druidic culture is powerful, some of the romantic tension feels dated, especially in how Eilan’s choices are framed through sacrifice. Still, the final hour delivers a gut punch—Landor’s voice cracks with restrained grief in the closing scenes, and I was fully back in the story’s grip. This isn’t escapist fantasy; it’s a patient, poetic exploration of devotion. Not for everyone, but unforgettable if it finds you at the right moment.
