The French House

I started *The French House* expecting another atmospheric Parisian thriller, but Clay Wise delivers something far more unsettling. The dual narration by Cheryl May and Jess Trepanier is a masterclass in voice differentiation—May’s Ally is weary but determined, her cadence dripping with exhaustion, while Trepanier’s supporting characters crackle with nervy energy. The production is crisp, with no distracting fades or over-processed ambiance, letting the story breathe. That said, the pacing occasionally drags in the middle third, where the investigative threads sprawl a little too wide before snapping back into focus. The dialogue can feel stilted at times, particularly in Ally’s internal monologues, which occasionally veer into melodrama. But these are minor quibbles in an otherwise gripping listen. The reveal of the ghost’s true identity is genuinely chilling, and the way Wise ties the supernatural into the very human tragedy of loss makes this more than just a mystery—it’s a haunting in the best sense. If you love your thrillers layered with emotional depth and a setting that feels lived-in, this is one to queue up immediately.
