Quill isn’t a lovable rogue or a tragic hero; he’s a *functionary*, and Jacobs’ performance leans into that brilliance. His voice is smooth as aged whiskey, but there’s a brittleness beneath it, like he’s one wrong word away from shattering. The real standout is how the audiobook handles silence—those pregnant pauses when Quill *doesn’t* say what he’s thinking, or when a customer’s hesitation speaks volumes. It’s a masterclass in using audio to amplify subtext. That said, the pacing stumbles in the middle. Andrews spends so much time establishing the shop’s eerie routine (the inventory checks, the contractual loopholes) that the plot’s emotional core—Quill’s buried guilt—feels rushed when it finally surfaces. And while Jacobs nails Quill’s voice, some of the side characters blur together, their deliveries lacking the distinct quirks that would make the shop’s clientele feel like a true cross-section of the damned. Still, the finale lands with the force of a slamming ledger book. This isn’t a story about grand battles or cosmic stakes; it’s about the cost of looking the other way, and how even the afterlife has a paper trail. If you love your fantasy with a side of existential dread and a narrator who can make “I’ll need your signature here” sound like a threat, this is your next listen.
