Her Daisy isn’t a heroine; she’s a live wire, her voice cracking between defiance and despair in a way that makes you lean in, even when the plot veers into melodrama. The real surprise, though, is Marian Funk’s work as [redacted for spoilers], whose delivery is so deliciously venomous it’s almost funny. Almost. The pacing is where things get tricky: the first third drags with overlong internal monologues (a hazard of literary fiction in audio form), but once the narrative splits between timelines, the tension becomes relentless. That said, this isn’t a flawless listen. Oliver Kube’s sections, while atmospheric, sometimes blur into a monotone that loses momentum—especially in the book’s more abstract passages. And the production’s use of abrupt volume shifts (a stylistic choice, I assume) can be jarring with headphones. But these are quibbles. What lingers is the *feeling* of the thing: a story that’s equal parts gothic fairy tale and psychological autopsy, elevated by narrators who understand that silence can be as sharp as a scream. If you’re here for the series’ signature angst, you’ll get it—but you’ll also get something rarer: an audiobook that *sounds* like a heart breaking.
