Teri Schnaubelt’s narration in *The Kidnap Years* is a masterclass in how to handle grim material without drowning in it. She’s not a sensationalist—her delivery is steady, almost clinical at times, which makes the more grotesque details land with even greater force. The moment she voices a kidnapper’s ransom note in a guttural, near-incoherent growl, or mimics the trembling panic of a mother hearing her child’s voice on a crackling phone line, the audiobook stops being a book and starts feeling like a crime scene you’re forced to walk through. That said, Schnaubelt occasionally stumbles with accents—her attempt at a Midwestern drawl in one section wobbles, and her portrayal of older male suspects sometimes veers into caricature. But these are minor quibbles in a performance that otherwise elevates Stout’s relentless research. The pacing is relentless too; there’s no fluff here, just one harrowing case after another, each more audacious than the last. My only critique? Stout occasionally bogs down in procedural minutiae—bank ledgers, court transcripts—which, while fascinating to a sliver of readers, slow the momentum for the average listener.
