The king’s refusal to see the trap is infuriating in the best way, and Stanek’s dialogue crackles with subtext. When an elf offers ‘the wisdom of the Reaches,’ you’ll hear the threat beneath the honeyed words. Fehr’s performance elevates the material. His elven voices are hypnotic, all sibilant *s*s and measured cadence, while the human nobles sound like blustering fools by comparison. My only gripe? The audio mixing occasionally flattens the dynamics—some of the king’s outbursts lack the chest-thumping oomph they deserve. And at 4 hours, the story’s brevity is both its strength and weakness: the climax lands with a knife’s precision, but I wanted *more* of the fallout. Still, for fans of *The Lies of Locke Lamora*’s scheming or *The Curse of Chalion*’s courtly tension, this is a gem. Just don’t expect dragons—or mercy.
